What to bring

Dress for the weather in clothes and sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. We highly recommend long trousers due to the presence of ticks in the wood – please click here for more info. Please check the weather forecast and bring waterproofs, warm layers, sun hat, sun protection and insect repellent as appropriate – if you’re not sure then bring it all! We will be outside for most or all of the day.

Please bring water and lunch – we’ll provide hot drinks and sweet treats so do let us know if you have any dietary requirements. Drinking water is available on site, for you to top up your water bottle.

How to get here

Hazel Hill Wood is located off Grimstead Road between Farley and East Grimstead. If using sat nav, use postcode SP5 1AU and you’ll see our yellow and green “Hazel Hill Wood” sign on the road – we don’t have a postcode but this is the farm opposite us. Detailed directions to the wood can be found here. Please get in touch if transport is an issue and we will try and help.

FAQs

Can I bring my dog?

No, we are a no dogs site.

Can I bring my child/children?

Yes, if you are able to supervise them and enable them and the rest of the group to work safely and effectively.

Can I just turn up on the day?

No, please let us know when you are planning to come. This enables us to plan appropriate tasks, and prepare accordingly – including making sure we have enough cake!

Can I visit Hazel Hill Wood whenever I like?

No, Hazel Hill Wood is not open to the public every day, due it being a retreat centre. We welcome local people to enjoy the peace of the wood (no dogs please) during volunteer days, 10am-3pm. We encourage arriving on foot or by bicycle if possible.

Can I arrive late or leave early?

Not really and yes. Ideally everyone arrives ready to start at 10am, as we work in different locations around the wood each time and may not be easy to find. We do a group welcome and health and safety briefing at 10am. Some people come for the morning and leave at lunchtime (around 1pm) which is always an option if that works better for you.
